This guidance applies both to visiting staff and students. The only difference between these categories is explained below, under Employers' Liability Insurance.
Public Liability Insurance
Visitors to the University of Cambridge should continue to be covered by their own institution's Public Liability Insurance policy.
While a visitor is working in UoC, under the supervision of University staff, the UoC Public Liability insurance will provide cover for them in situations where the UoC was negligent and this led to the visitor causing third party personal injury or property damage. All work should be appropriately risk assessed and supervised.
Employers' Liability Insurance
For Employers' Liability Insurance purposes, the definition of employee is as follows:
Any natural person who is:
a) under a contract of service or apprenticeship with the insured
b) a labour master or labour only subcontractor or persons supplied by any of them
c) self-employed
d) under a work experience or similar scheme
e) hired or borrowed by the insured from another employer
f) volunteering to assist or co-opted to assist the insured and working for the insured in connection with the business while under the insured’s direct control or supervision.
Any person falling into the above categories is covered for an injury arising out of and in the course of their employment by UoC. Visiting students are covered similarly, but by the Public Liability Insurance policy (and only if the University was negligent).
Travel Insurance
Visitors are entitled to cover under the University's Business Travel Insurance policy, for overseas trips on UoC business. There is no cover for trips within the UK. Cover is subject to departmental risk assessment and approval as per the usual procedure.
Motor Insurance
Visitors are allowed to drive UoC vehicles on UoC business, subject to
- having a valid licence to drive in the UK and
- departmental risk assessment and approval.
Other Insurance
The University of Cambridge does not provide other insurance policies for visitors, for example:
- health insurance
- motor insurance for non-UoC vehicles
- insurance for personal belongings
- personal liability insurance
Unfortunately, the UoC Insurance Section is not authorised or regulated to advise on personal insurance cover.
